'Placebo. Review: live @ Wembley Arena Nov 2004'

Ok, I'll start with an admission.
For years I've been slating this band left, right and centre - the image, the tunes,
Brian Molko's voice, you name it. But last Friday in the space of around two hours my
preconceptions completely went out of the window. Tonight was the last chance untill 2006
to see Placebo perform live, and you could feel the electricity circulating through the venue
from the minute the first roadie showed up. By the time the trio walked on stage to perform an
extended synth-led rendition "Taste in Men" the atmosphere was unreal. Wether it was that atmosphere,
Molko's performance or the fact I've just not spent enough time with this band's back catalogue
I' don't know - but a set wich I expected to include only a handful of tracks I kinda liked, seemed
to consist of one storming song after another - "Every You Every Me", "The Bitter End", "Special K"
and many many more. Then of course there was the special guest appearence during the encore of one
Mr. Robert Smith - according to Molko: "The only man in rock who's allowed to wear more make-upthan me".
With their joint performance of "Without You I'M Nothing" and, (get this), a cover of "Boys Don't Cry"
things were getting hard to take in. Right now, I can't wait for 2006.

E va bene, comincerò con un'ammissione.
Per anni ho stroncato questa band a destra e a sinistra - l'immagine, il suono, la voce di Brian Molko, tutto.
Ma venerdì scorso (5 novembre) nell'arco di due ore circa ho buttato tutti i miei preconcetti fuori dalla finestra.
Questa notte era l' ultima possibilità di vedere i Placebo esibirsi dal vivo fino al 2006, e tu potevi sentire
l'elettricità circolarti nelle vene dal primo minuto fino alla fine dello spettacolo. Mentre il trio si esibiva
sul palco con una lunga versione tutta sintetizzatore di "Taste in Men" l'atmosfera era irreale. Non so se sia
stata l'atmosfera, la performance di Molko o il fatto di non aver mai dedicato abbastanza tempo al vecchio repertorio
della band - ma un set che mi aspettavo includesse solo una manciata di pezzi che potevano piacermi si è trasformato
in una tempesta di brani uno dopo l'altro - "Every You Every Me", "The Bitter End" "Special K" e molto molto di più.
Poi naturalmente c'è stata l'apparizione, durante il bis, di Robert Smith in persona - d'accordo con Molko:
"L'unico uomo del rock che può permettersi di truccarsi più di me!". Con il duetto in "Without You I'M Nothing" e,
(senti questa), la cover di "Boys Don't Cry" la situazione diventava sempre più difficile da accettare. Proprio adesso,
non posso aspettare fino al 2006.
